So everyday you wake up bright and early feeling weightless and, greeted by the stunning view of Earth from hundreds of miles above, right? Then surely you crawl out of your sleeping bag stuck to the wall like a baby bat. Yet in the ISS in space you can do all this and more so welcome to the morning routines of astronauts—a blend of practicality, science, and a touch of daily frustration
In space, no one can here you whine about not wanting to wake up well except maybe for mission control or maybe your Earth-daddy/mommy. Astronauts tediously struggle out of their sleeping bags, which are secured to prevent them from dreaming away from the reality that you have nowhere to run. They then float to the hygiene station for a chance to put a bright spin to their long day ahead. Are you still brushing your teeth with fluoride and running water? You should consider using NASA’s special rinse-less toothpaste and a damp cloth, turning a simple task into a fascinating obstacle.
Breakfast in space is a feast of packaged goods that make regular Earth style ramen a feast. Wait they have Ramen up there right? Chances are even that is some a task with two or more steps we take for granted. Sweet, sweet gravity you just can’t beat it. Astronauts enjoy a variety of boringly packaged foods, from scrambled eggs to tropical fruit salads. Each meal is a testament to the innovation that makes life aboard the International Space Station (ISS) not just possible, but enjoyable if not questionable
As they float through their daily routines, astronauts exercise to maintain muscle mass and bone density because you ain’t gonna jog around the block. A jog down here you can get hit by a car(boo!) or even chased by a deranged animal(boring!) up there theirs good all Flying spaghetti monster. In space Picture them running on a treadmill or using resistance bands, all while secured with a harness so you can’t hurt yourself or float away forever. It’s a workout like no other, against the backdrop of our beautiful blue planet and dark never ending wonder.
But this is just a glimpse into the unique life of astronauts. There’s so much more to discover about their daily mornings, scientific experiments, and the awe-inspiring drinks they swig down daily.
